Thinning out my life-long collection of Chinese chop-marked coins of the world. This is a set of four (4) Mexico Cap and Rays 8 Reales silver coins dated from the mid 1870’s through the early 1890’s. All exhibit chop marks from use in the Orient during the 19th century. Chinese merchants would mark the genuine silver coins of the world with their own special “chop” mark indicating that the coin was correct composition and weight and able to be used in commerce. Mexican “pieces of eight” were a major currency at the time and circulated widely throughout the world. Several different chop marks. Interesting historical coins; well traveled.
