To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, the Peoples Bank of China was authorized by the State Council to issue a set of commemorative gold coins in 1979. Each proof set consists of four coins depicting four of China’s historically important national monuments, all with a face value of 400 Yuan. The obverse design of each coin is the national emblem of the Peoples Republic of China. The reverse designs are, respectively, Tian An Men, the Monument to the Peoples Heroes, the Great Hall of the People and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. Each coin comes in a transparent coin case, and the set comes in wooden gift box, with a Certificate of Authenticity (#30627). Monument to the People’s Heroes. This monument stands in the centre of Tian An Men Square. Chairman Mao personally laid the cornerstone for the monument. The construction began in 1952 and was completed in 1958. The front side of the monument glitters with Chairman Mao’s inscription “The People’s Heroes Are Immortal” The reverse side bears an epitaph drafted by Chairman Mao and incised with Premier Zhou En-lai’s handwriting.
