Our main consigner, Martin Weiss, is a pioneer in the marketing of modern issue Chinese coins. Martin Weiss has been a leader in the numismatics hobby for over 40 years. He is perhaps best known as the individual who helped to make the coins of China among the most collected coins around the world. Weiss tells: In 1983, there was virtually no market for modern Chinese coins in the United States or anywhere else. And for good reasons. The People’s Republic of China had only issued small denomination coins for circulation before 1979. No commemoratives. No silver. No gold. Weiss’s public relations campaign got the news of the new Panda coin (and his company’s name-PandaAmerica) in newspapers throughout the country, and orders poured in. When the first catalogue of “China Panda Gold and Silver Coins” was published in China, Martin Weiss was the only American dealerto be featured. In addition to creating a worldwide market for China’s Panda coins, Martin Weiss developed a series of Inventions and Discoveries coins with China, that was a PandaAmerica exclusive. Weiss also developed a series of gold and silver Lunar-Zodiac commemoratives for the country of Singapore and coins commemorating the 500. Anniversary of Columbus’ landfall in the New World for the Bahamas, all of which were successfully distributed exclusively by his company, PandaAmerica. Weiss contracted to distribute coins for the Perth Mint (Australia), the British Royal Mint, Israel Coins and Medals Corporation, Banco de Mexico, Monnaie de Paris, and others including the Olympic Coin Program of the United States Treasury. Martin Weiss was the recipient of Professional Numismatic GuildZ39;s Sol Kaplan Award in 2002 for helping to cleanse our profession of thievery and for upholding the ethics that the PNG stands for. Weiss’s imagination, get-it-done attitude, professional standing, and worldwide connections assure the success of his future ventures. In addition to his membership in PNG, Mr. Weiss is a Life Member of the American Numismatic Association, and he abides by the Codes of Ethics of both organizations. Martin Weiss now devotes his efforts full time to making the websites pacificworldcoins, bidbuycoins or coinsmakeoffer world-class and easy to use. China RARE 1980 Olympic Silver Proof Piedfort Proof Coins Complete Set
This is a complete set of ultra rare 8 coin China Summer – (released in June of 1980) , and Winter-(released in May of 1980) Olympic proof silver coins, Piedfort – double thickness version. Having dealt in these coins for over 30 years this is the only complete set of these rare piedforts I have ever handled. Most collectors have not even seen a single piedfort coin except in catalogues. They are extremely rare and highly valued for their uniqueness and extra care taken in preparing and executing the minting process. Edited by Shen Jiau lists only a few of these coins, the others being extremely elusive. Although mintages are listed at 500, that figure represents the maximum the mint was authorized to strike, it is commonly known that the actual numbers of coins struck in piedfort version are significantly lower. Some estimates are in the area of only 100 or less of each coin. One of the top international coin dealers of Rare and Collectible Coins, has this to say: THE 1980 SILVER AND GOLD PIEDFORTS ARE INCREDIBLY RARE. EVEN THE 1980 COPPER PIEDFORTS ARE RARELY SEEN. ACTUAL MINTAGE OF THE SILVERS APPEAR TO BE MUCH LESS THAN 500 The coins are all in superb condition in original capsules. Each coin is exactly double the thickness of the regular proof version as well as exactly double the weight. The mintages of the proof piedforts are a tiny fraction of the regular issued proof coins. Quoting the China catalog; Part of the gold and silver coins are struck from thickened blanks with repeated die-casting method to add value. They are loved by people all over the world and appreciated as one of the rarest and most unique Olympic Commerative coins in history. No collection of China modern coins is complete without at least one piedfort version proof coin. This is an opportunity to have a complete set of the first ones ever created in China. Since then the tradition has remained whereby China rarely issues a legal tender piedfort coin. Again, these are the first. The 1980 China Olympic coins encompass many firsts, not only the first Olympic coin series ever in China, but also the first sports themed coin series. It is also the first series of Chinese coins that do not have the words “Peoples Republic of China” on the obverse side. Also note the Silver Archer piedfort stands out as the most special of all. Besides being a rare piedfort it stands out as as most interesting in appearance:the much smaller (23mm) diameter of the Archer coin compared to the rest (28 to 33 mm) makes the archer look like a small silver cylinder when thickened to the same thickness as the rest of the piedforts. Combined with the small mintage compared to the 2,000 mintage of its regular issue Winter Olympic cousins, the Silver archery piedfort is one of the most precious of all modern Chinese coins. In fact it is one of the rarest Silver Olympic coins in the world, even rarer than the 1952 Finland Markka silver coin, the first Olympic silver coin since ancient Greece. Included are: Archer – 15 Yuan, 20g, 500 mintage Wrestlers- 20 Yuan, 20g, 500 mintage Soccer- 30 Yuan, 30g, 500 mintage Equestrian- 30 Yuan, 30g, 500 mintage Skier- 30 Yuan 30g, 500 mintage Downhill Racer- 30 Yuan, 30 gm, 500 mintage Figure Skater- 30 Yuan, 30g, 500 mintage Ski Jumper – 30 Yuan, 30g, 500 mintage. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) are both third-party services that grade and certify coins. They are the two most well-known and highly respected independent coin grading companies in the U. All coins listed as PCGS MS70 or NGC MS70 are in Mint State Perfect condition; however, the PCGS MS70 coins were certified as such by the Professional Coin Grading Service, whereas the NGC MS70 coins were given that grade designation by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. What’s the difference between a PR69 coin and a PF69 coin? Those are both proof coins with a numerical grade of 69 on the Coin Grading Scale. PR is the designation the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) uses to denote proof coins; PF is the designation the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) uses. What’s the difference between PCGS “UCAM” and “DCAM”? Both DCAM and UCAM designate coins with strong frosted devices against clear, mirrored fields, and the terms can be used interchangeably. UCAM (“Ultra Cameo”) is used by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and DCAM (“Deep Cameo”) is used by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Why is a Certified coin a better investment? PCGS & NGC are the main two impartial Numismatic Grading Services in the world and is a guarantee that the coin is genuine and has been graded accurately and professionally. The sonically sealed solid plastic slabb is individually numbered so that the details of the coin(s) can be verified on a central database, and is also tamperproof.
